State Significant Development Application for vibrant seniors’ community lodged with Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure
Uniting is excited to bring a transformative vision to the Waverley Estate, creating a vibrant community where people of all backgrounds feel supported and connected. This redevelopment will not only honour the Estate’s rich Victorian heritage but also introduce modern, accessible spaces designed to meet the evolving needs of the Waverley community. By expanding housing options and enhancing aged care services, Uniting is ensuring that older residents can continue to live with dignity and independence in a thriving environment.
“A key focus of the redevelopment is the creation of state-of-the-art aged care services, offering compassionate, high-quality services in a comfortable and supportive environment,” said Simon Furness, Uniting NSW.ACT’s Director of Property and Housing.
“We’re proposing a range of independent living apartments, including 23 affordable rental units, providing seniors with flexible housing options that promote independence and community engagement. With on-site support services and amenities, the redevelopment will enable residents to continue to live at home as their care and health needs change, while remaining active and connected to their surroundings.”
The redevelopment will not only enhance Uniting's existing services in the area, but it will also strengthen ties with the War Memorial Hospital, establishing a hub for healthcare, wellbeing, and social connection in the centre of Waverley.
“At its heart, this redevelopment is about creating a welcoming and vibrant community—one that respects its history while embracing the future,” Simon said.
“Since we last met with the community, we have refined our plans and maintained our strong focus on preserving the Estate’s historic features and buildings. We have also continued to address feedback on traffic, parking, and environmental preservation as we finalised the plans and submitted the SSDA.
We deeply value community input and encourage residents to review the redevelopment proposal and share their comments during the public exhibition period.”
This submission follows a period of community consultation, during which feedback was carefully considered and refinements made to the proposed plans.
The redevelopment proposal for Uniting’s Waverley Estate is now open for public exhibition following the lodgement of the State Significant Development Application (SSDA) in late 2024.
Throughout the redevelopment and beyond, Uniting War Memorial Hospital will continue its operations, ensuring ongoing access to essential health services with minimal disruption during construction. Once completed, the redevelopment will complement the hospital, further enriching the services available to the local community.
“Uniting has been a trusted provider of community health and aged care services in Waverley for over 100 years, and we remain committed to serving the community throughout the redevelopment and beyond.
“We’re excited to move forward with this next stage and look forward to delivering high-quality aged care services and independent living options that truly support our future residents and local seniors in the area,” Simon said.
