A new $5 million retirement village clubhouse has been inspired by Canberra’s iconic heritage buildings and garden city planning framework.
Lendlease has opened the new clubhouse at its The Aerie village in Narrabundah.
The clubhouse includes an indoor heated swimming pool, gym, lounge, outdoor terrace, hairdressing salon, library and more. Since the opening of the clubhouse, regular resident-led activity groups are already starting to form.
Michael Jeffreson, Design Director of Lendlease's consultant architects Demaine Partnership, said the clubhouse and surrounding village were in line with Canberra’s early 20th century town planning vision.
“The Aerie Clubhouse draws inspiration from Canberra’s finest buildings, those built in the infancy of the city and also those most true to the Burley Griffin (planning) vision,” Mr Jeffreson said.
“These include buildings like the Hotel Canberra - architecture characterised by generous sheltering roofs, robust red brickwork, and elegant rendered columns and trims.
“Garden City architecture needs to respond to landscape, trees and views, so attention was paid to integration with the setting through use of generous indoor-outdoor areas, such as spacious sheltered balconies, verandahs and alfresco areas.
“There is a sense of decorum, proportion and elegance that infuses Canberra’s early houses, public buildings and civic places, and this provides the inspiration for the Aerie’s architectural style.”
The clubhouse enjoys expansive views over the Kowen ranges and the Capital Public Golf Course.
Lendlease said the clubhouse will be playing an important role breaking down COVID-19 related isolation.
